During the cold winter months, people often want to stay bundled inside with blankets and hot chocolate. Second Helpings keeps pumping out and delivering meals to partner agencies during the most necessary time of year, and we couldn’t do it without our devoted, amazing volunteers. Here is the list of the volunteers who have gone above and beyond, with at least 2,000 hours (250 eight-hour work days) donated to Second Helpings.
Leo Scott (7,030 hours) (retired) – Leo Scott was a volunteer even before there was a Second Helpings or a formal volunteer program. Leo was so integral to the Food Rescue program that he had a key to the building!
Kevin Reid (5,777 hours) – Kevin has volunteered since 2004 and has served over 5,700 hours with Second Helpings! He helps deliver meals every Tuesday morning and often stays for the afternoon to help with food rescue or food sorting. You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced Kevin’s contagious laugh.
Dick Bender (4,053 hours) – You can find Dick in the Hunger Relief kitchen on Wednesday and Friday mornings. In addition, Dick has introduced and mentored many long-term Second Helpings volunteers. When he’s not volunteering at SH, he’s volunteering at other organizations or riding his bike!
Carol Adams (3,179 hours) – Carol is the longest serving Second Helpings volunteer, beginning her service in 1998 as the organization began. In addition to her office work, Carol contributes years of incredible Second Helpings memories.
Ryan Zumbahlen (3,124 hours) – You can find Ryan rescuing food on the west side of Indianapolis every Friday morning. He has been with Second Helpings since 2002 and many have indulged in the tasty sodas he stocks in our break room vending machine. Did you know that Ryan donates all of that change to Second Helpings?
Hal Cole (2,950 hours) (retired)- Not only was Hal Cole a great Hunger Relief Kitchen volunteer – often coming in two times a week – he always had his educator hat on. He would bring books to the staff about management and workplace culture. Hal was always cheery and full of great stories.
Meg Feldman (2,643 hours) – Meg volunteers in the kitchen on Thursday afternoons and at the front desk on Friday afternoons. She always comes through when we are in a pinch and loves to volunteer with special events. She knows when we need help before we even do!
Kathy Davis (2,602 hours) – Kathy has been a dedicated Second Helpings volunteer since 2007. You can find her whipping up some delicious dishes in a tilt skillet every Monday morning and sorting through those huge Thursday bounties of bread.
Dale Ternet (2,513 hours) – You can find Dale on Wednesday mornings with his regular meat “cut-up” crew. He has been with Second Helpings since 2006 and has chopped protein for more Hunger Relief Meals than any of us can imagine.
Dick Barrett (2,476 hours) – Dick has been around Second Helpings for a long time! He used to run a Second Helpings booth, searched for potential food donors, and also delivered thousands of meals to partner agencies. Now, you’ll find Dick in the kitchen on Wednesday mornings.
James Washington (2,433 hours) – James graduated from the culinary training program in 2009. In addition to his volunteer work here, he will often fill in making lunch for the volunteers and staff when a class is not in session.
Carole Boleman (2,382 hours) (retired)- Carole Boleman was one of those “bad weather” volunteers – as a busy landscape architect she didn’t have any free time during the sunny days. She was a master of the tilt skillet, creating recipes and meals – 600 at a time.
John MaGee (2,370 hours) – John loves football and the Indianapolis Colts! He has been volunteering at Second Helpings and providing warm, much needed hugs since 2004. He spends his hours chopping vegetables and meat in the Hunger Relief kitchen every Wednesday morning.
John Spitznogle (2,169 hours) – How would we be able to chop all of that food without sharp knives? Well, John volunteers every Wednesday morning as the official Second Helpings knife sharpener. Once, he has sharpened those blades to perfection, he joins the meat “cut-up” crew to put those knives to good use and get in some solid laughs.
Anne-Marie Quets (2,166 hours) – Originally from Belgium, Anne-Marie volunteers in the Hunger Relief Kitchen every Thursday morning with her husband, John. You will typically find her dicing up your favorite veggie!
David Dunnington (2,056 hours) (retired)- As a long-term Wednesday meal delivery driver, Dave Dunnington often did double duty, coming in early to deliver meals to Cathedral Kitchen before his regular route.
Phyllis Fulford (2,033 hours) – Phyllis has been a supporter and volunteer of Second Helpings since 2002, and now volunteers in the kitchen every Wednesday morning. With her husband Howard, she was awarded the Time, Treasure, and Talent award for extraordinary service to Second Helpings.
Dave Dant (2,025 hours) – Even with a full-time job, Dave delivers meals to our partner agencies every Wednesday morning. He’s been a volunteer at Second Helpings since 2000 and has delivered over 100,000 meals to our Indy neighbors in need.
Bill Tardy (2,012 hours) (retired) – As a volunteer delivery driver, Bill Tardy drove 940 times – that’s over 4000 meal deliveries! He was a tireless, always smiling volunteer – despite the number of stairs he had to climb with heavy meals and the number of pans he had to wash!
