Name: Alison Schumacher
Title: Partnerships & Donor Engagement Manager
How long have you worked at Second Helpings?
A year and a half – I was lucky enough to start during Jennifer Vigran’s final week at Second Helpings AND be able to welcome Linda Broadfoot in as CEO.
What do you like most about your job?
All the opportunities for connecting and learning! I like making connections – whether that’s connecting people to people, to resources, or to meaningful impact.
What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?
Find and cultivate a network of peers and mentors. Let your interests, values, and passions guide your career exploration, not just your skills.
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I’d probably be an editor. From editing several small publications for jobs over the years to editing my dad’s memoir, I’ve almost always had an editing gig going. I love the editing process and helping to craft the finished product.
Where is your favorite place to be?
Chautauqua, NY. It’s my version of summer camp. A week there is filled with lectures, conversations on Big Ideas, music, and art. Add a beautiful lake and bike/walking transport = perfection.
Favorite line from a movie or book?
“Never be so focused on what you’re looking for that you overlook the thing you actually find.” Ann Patchett, State of Wonder
