Earlier this summer, when we saw positivity rates dropping in Marion County, we eased up somewhat on Second Helpings’ masking policy. In the past two weeks, we have seen the positivity rates rise in Marion County to levels not seen since early May and the number of cases has also risen significantly. Unfortunately, the lows we saw in late June and early July were only temporary.
As you may have read, the Delta variant now makes up more than 85% of the COVID samples in Indiana and is more contagious than earlier versions. While the vast majority of infections are transmitted between unvaccinated individuals, the CDC reports that in rare instances, even fully vaccinated individuals who are infected, can transmit the virus to others.
Masking, Social Distancing, and Vaccination Status
On July 27 the CDC changed its guidance regarding masking based on the level of community transmission. In areas that have “High” or “Substantial” transmission, the CDC now recommends that everyone, including vaccinated people wear masks indoors in public settings. Moving forward, Second Helpings will regularly monitor the CDC’s assessment of local community transmission, and mask requirements will be adjusted accordingly. The current standards will be posted at all entrances, on this post and Facebook page.
Today, the CDC’s community transmission rate for Marion County is “High.” Based on this categorization, the following requirements are now in effect:
Masks are required for everyone while at Second Helpings.
Staff, volunteers, and students are asked to provide proof of their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status most often includes a CDC vaccination card or a state-issued vaccination certificate available at ourshot.in.gov. Please provide a copy in person or by email to the appropriate staff member:
- Volunteers: Michelle Woodruff, michelle@secondhelpings.org
- Staff: Lynda Smith, lynda@secondhelpings.org
- Students and temporary workers: Nora Spitznogle, nora@secondhelpings.org
No one will be permitted to ride in a Second Helpings vehicle with individuals outside of their household unless they have provided proof of vaccination.
For the purposes of this policy, “masks” include face coverings that are consistent with public health guidelines for the prevention of COVID-19.
It is Second Helpings’ policy to support and respect individuals who continue to wear masks and other face coverings when not required, and no one will be asked to remove them.
Regardless of your vaccination status, please continue to be considerate of others who may have a compromised immune system or other situation where masking would be a matter of reasonable caution and common courtesy.
Work areas will be configured to allow social distancing for unvaccinated individuals. Social distancing will not be required for those who are fully vaccinated, however, the wishes of those who want to continue social distancing will be honored. Volunteers can talk with a staff member in their work area to ensure that their workstation allows for social distancing. Alternate workspaces will be available as needed for staff whose desks are less than 6 feet apart and staff members can address other social distancing needs with their supervisor. Culinary Job Training class sizes will continue operate at reduced capacity to allow social distancing for all students in both the classroom and the training kitchen.
