Those of us who have been fortunate enough to encounter October Volunteer of the Month Betsy Kershaw’s beautiful, bright spirit are truly the lucky ones. In just six short months, Kershaw has contributed more 300 hours of her time towards ensuring that our Indy neighbors receive some of the tastiest sandwiches in Indianapolis.
When she began volunteering last spring we thought, “Where in the world has this incredible lady been all of these years?” Well, it turns out that she is friends with one of our other dear volunteers, John Magee. For all of you Wednesday volunteers who have the pleasure of knowing John, you now know that in addition to sharing his keen knowledge of Colts football and professional wrestling, he also likes to spread the word about Second Helpings. Kershaw volunteers every single Wednesday and Thursday morning joyfully making sandwiches or helping with laundry.
What does she love about volunteering at Second Helpings?
“Friends and sandwiches!” That is her answer when asked what she enjoys most about volunteering at Second Helpings. She says, “I’ve always wanted to work in a food pantry, even if it’s in a volunteer role. That’s what I want to do. People might be surprised to know that I live with chronic renal failure and some mental challenges, but I keep pushing and pushing to live the best life I can.” Kershaw’s kind heart and positive energy are contagious. If you ever have the opportunity to volunteer on a Wednesday or Thursday, make sure you step into the cafeteria and chat with her for a bit. The conversation is sure to be a bright spot in your day.
Betsy, you are a beaming ray of sunshine and we can’t even begin to thank you for your sincere dedication to Second Helpings. You are one incredible lady and we thank our lucky stars every single day that you are part of our volunteer family.
