Since February 2016, Megan Fowler selflessly dedicated nearly 500 hours of her time to the mission of Second Helpings. She is truly one marvelous lady and once you read this article celebrating her impact, you will understand why she is our Volunteer of the Month for October 2018.
When Megan made the decision to retire from her corporate career of 32 years, it was important to her that she give back to the community that she loves so much. Just like several folks from our volunteer family, she found out about Second Helpings through Volunteer Match. She attended a volunteer orientation and was immediately sold on the idea that she would be able to support our mission by combining her corporate talents with her love for cooking.
You can find Megan diligently prepping and wrapping hundreds of pans in our Hunger Relief Kitchen every Monday afternoon with the help of her friends (who all met via their weekly pan wrapping adventures). Due to her background in human resources, she also volunteers to teach a course on job search skills to every Culinary Job Training class and participates in their mock interview process.
She says, “Volunteering at Second Helpings has been a wonderful experience for me. The close friendships I’ve made with volunteers and staff members make it feel like I’m part of an extended family. Knowing that the work I do has a direct impact in feeding individuals and helping students find a job is very rewarding. When I hear from the culinary students that the information from the class has helped them with their job search and finding a job, I’m thrilled.”
Prior to joining the Second Helpings volunteer family, she volunteered with Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation where she helped with the adult adaptive exercise classes for individuals with disabilities. Since her retirement, she has enjoyed traveling, gardening, biking and learning cooking secrets from Chef Kathy and Caroline.
Megan, we are grateful for your benevolent spirit, and we appreciate your dedication towards our mission to transform lives through the power food.
