If you haven’t already met the newest member of our Hunger Relief Kitchen staff, then you’re missing out! Ashleigh joined the Second Helpings team as a Kitchen Assistant in November, and we are very excited to have her as part of our family. You’re not going to believe us when we will tell you everything this fantastic lady has on her plate and how she is able to manage all of it with enthusiasm and grace.
As someone who has quite a bit of experience in the food and restaurant industry, Ashleigh has always been drawn to combating food injustice. She struggles to accept the amount of food waste that occurs in our society and the number of people who suffer from food insecurity, so when she found out about the Kitchen Assistant position at Second Helpings, submitting her resume was a no-brainer.
Over the years she’s worked with Monon Food Company, a local butchery, home health care providers, and even manages her own catering service. While the food industry seems to be where she’s created a career, she is actually working towards a degree in Speech Language Pathology with a minor in Spanish at Butler University. She speaks three languages—English, Spanish, and American Sign Language—and is currently researching how language disorders affect the use of sign language.
In addition to her part-time gig in the Hunger Relief Kitchen, she is also employed as a tutor of American Sign Language, Spanish, and Public Speaking at Butler University. Oh, and did I mention that she also has her own catering business? Because she does that, too! In what little spare time she has these days, she enjoys entertaining her friends and spoiling them with delicious meals. The more food restrictions the better, because she likes a good challenge.
So, to sum it all up, we got pretty lucky when Ashleigh decided to join our Hunger Relief Kitchen team. She is passionate about feeding people and her bright spirit makes everyone smile. If you haven’t already had the privilege of meeting this lovely lady, sign up to volunteer on a Monday morning, Wednesday morning, Thursday evening, or Saturday and get to know her!
