Ok, the word’s finally out. We’re crazy about Carl! We had to take a bit of a hiatus from our Volunteer of the Month nomination and Carl was actually named Volunteer of the Month allllll the way back in early March before everyone’s world was turned upside down. Due to the pandemic and having so many incredibly dedicated helpings hands over the past few months, it was just way too hard for us to celebrate the hard work of just one person. Now that we are slowly settling into a new normal, what better time to dust off the old Volunteer of the Month award and show our appreciation for the one and only CARL PRICE!
Carl has been volunteering for a little over two years and has provided nearly 400 hours of his time and talent towards ensuring that our Indy neighbors are well fed with bellies full of tasty food. Chances are, if you’ve ever volunteered on a Thursday afternoon or volunteered as a one-time group, Carl has been your go-to guy. He’s definitely learned his way around the Hunger Relief kitchen and is willing to take on just about any task imaginable. Produce chopping, meat grinding, tilt operating, meat fileting, wrapping and staging panned meals, washing and sanitizing, AND leading hundreds of one-time group volunteers just to name a few. Oh, and did we say that he does all of it with one of the best smiles and positive attitudes around? Because Thursday afternoons are an absolute delight due to his joyful spirit.
Once upon a time in a world long ago when many of us travelled around town using a car service called Uber, Carl drove one of our staff to work one day. Obviously, that staff person excitedly explained the mission of Second Helpings. One thing led to another and Carl joined our volunteer family! While he’s taken a bit of a hiatus from Uber and Lyft driving, he continues to serve the mission of Second Helpings every single Thursday. Additionally, he enjoys working out at the YMCA, spending time with his 6-year old grandson and travelling with his lovely wife. Want to hear something really amazing, though? He’s pedaled the length of Michigan 5 times. Say what?! Yes, you read that right. 5 TIMES!!! That’s a lot of pedaling, folks.
So, to sum it all up, we got UBER lucky when Carl decided to join the Second Helpings volunteer family! The word grateful does not hold enough meaning to show how much appreciation we have for this guy. He’s literally one in a million!
