Our newest Volunteer of the Month was nominated by Laney, our Senior Kitchen Coordinator, who said, “Chris Warren has been with us for two years, and has already left a wonderful impression in our kitchen. He is always willing to help wherever it is needed most. Truly, no job is too big or small for him. He always has a smile and kind words for anyone coming through the kitchen. His presence definitely brightens the day.”

How did you become involved with Second Helpings?

I have had an interest in food insecurity for many years, and I have always enjoyed cooking. Then coincidentally a few years ago, I joined a group outing to Second Helpings that was coordinated by a good friend. This awareness of the organization along with my interest in helping others came together with the availability of more time when I semi-retired two years ago.

What things have you done since you began volunteering with us?

My first role in the kitchen was chopping vegetables. Since then, I have volunteered in many of the volunteer roles to see which area I enjoyed the most. I have found that I enjoy working with the tilts and have volunteered in that area most of my time.

What have you liked best about volunteering at Second Helpings?

There are many distinct aspects that I enjoy. First, I enjoy realizing that at the end of our volunteer day we have made a significant amount of food that will be served to others that need some extra help for whatever reason. Secondly, since I am newly semi-retired, my weekly schedule is still pretty fluid so I m not able to volunteer on the same day each week and as a result, I volunteer on different days of the week when someone else may not be able to volunteer on their normal day. So far, this variable schedule has worked well for me and for Second Helpings. And last but not least, all the staff and volunteers have been extremely friendly and welcoming, which creates a great environment to join every week.

What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?

I am proud that I can play a small part in a major effort to help feed hungry Hoosiers.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?

I spend a lot of time with different fitness activities including walking, running and pickleball. I am also enjoying traveling with my wife, Heidi. We have a trip planned to Alaska this summer and we are looking forward to visiting a new part of the country.

Do you volunteer with any other organizations?

Yes, I joined our neighborhood HOA in January as the board president. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity to join in Noblesville, and I found one right at home!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

The spring before I turned 50 years old, I decided to improve my fitness. To get me moving, I created a mantra “5K before five zero.” I completed my first 5K the weekend of my 50th birthday. Since then, I have completed several sprint triathlons and several half marathons. Besides improving my conditioning, training created an opportunity for me to work out with both of my daughters. That was a win-win!
