Ready to fight hunger?

Second Helpings is a volunteer-powered organization. Our biggest volunteer need right now is for volunteer drivers and driver companions. We have shifts available throughout the week, Monday-Friday, morning and afternoon, for you to help us rescue food and deliver meals in central Indiana.

What does it take to be a volunteer driver?

As a Volunteer Driver, you will deliver Second Helpings meals to partner organizations across central Indiana. You will get to see firsthand where Second Helpings meals go and make sure our partner agencies receive their meals on time. Requirements include:

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable BMV record
  • 18 or older
  • Ability to Read Maps
  • Ability to Communicate Effectively
  • Lifting up to 50 Pounds
  • Lifting Overhead
  • Working in a Loud Environment
  • Knowledge of Community Streets is a plus!

A volunteer driver shift includes:

  • Loading outgoing meals into a Second Helpings vehicles
  • Delivering and unloading meals at partner organizations’ facilities
  • Monitoring proper safe food handling practices at Second Helpings and at partner organizations
  • Returning used pans to Second Helpings and unloading the Second Helpings vehicle
  • Head covering (hat, bandana, scarf, etc.); shirt with sleeves; and non-slip, closed-toe shoes required for every shift

Note – Meal Delivery Drivers will volunteer as a Driver Companion for several shifts to understand routes and procedures before they are eligible to be Drivers.
