On July 8, Second Helpings delivered its 10th millionth meal to Dayspring Center, a shelter which houses, feeds, and clothes homeless families in the Indianapolis area. The meal was a special summer picnic – hamburgers, fries, coleslaw, and applesauce – and was enjoyed by 30 young individuals, who gather daily for Dayspring’s six-week summer camp.
Dayspring Executive Director Lori Casson stated that Second Helpings provides around 3,000 meals a month, free of charge, to Dayspring and saves the organization from having to pay for those meals.
Instead, Dayspring can focus on providing other services to homeless families and children in the area.
Since 1998, Second Helpings has rescued more than 25 million pounds of food that might otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, wholesalers, restaurants, and hotels around Indianapolis. Dayspring is one of 85 social service agencies that receives meals from Second Helpings, while over 450,000 volunteers hours have been dedicated since 1998 in order to make and deliver 10 million meals.
