CJT Team at the Juneteenth Foodways Festival
Our Culinary Job Training team has been out in the community this summer! Here’s a glimpse of what the team has been up to lately:
On Friday, June 14, our Culinary Job Training Chefs Kyle Burnett and Jon Askelson, along with the 10 students in Class 162, participated in the Juneteenth Foodways Festival at the President Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.
Our Chefs offered hourly demonstrations of Chef Dolly Johnson’s corn pudding recipe at the event. It was also a great opportunity for our students to work a public event, in their first week of the program!
Connecting with the Indianapolis culinary community is a critical piece of our Culinary Job Training curriculum. We want our students to see the variety of opportunities available to them after they graduate, from food trucks to hotels, to catering, hospitals, and more.
We’re grateful to partners like the hospitality program at Ivy Tech Community College and the JW Marriott downtown, who have committed to hosting every CJT class for a field trip. Class 161 also toured Smoking Goose Meatery and Public Greens. Class 162 is already scheduled for a tour of Eskenazi Health.

Community outreach is also an important piece of our recruitment efforts. Ashley Berna, our Culinary Job Training Coordinator, attends a variety of community events to promote this program. So far this summer, she has represented Second Helpings at the “Second Chance Workshop” held by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and the Team Worc Indy Job Fair and Resource Expo.
