I am so happy to present to you Maggie Caldwell, Second Helpings’ Volunteer of the Month for April 2024! Maggie volunteers at our front desk on Thursday mornings. We appreciate your kindness and warmth to all guests and volunteers that enter our doors, and for occasionally staying late when the afternoon shift was unfilled. You are so loved and appreciated.

How did you become involved with Second Helpings?
I came to Second Helpings at the suggestion of my nephew, Zach Rotella, who works at Second Helpings when I told him I needed to start doing more with my time. He impressed me with the work they do and he likes being there. So here I am.
What things have you done since you began volunteering with us?
My work here has me welcoming those coming to the front door and directing them to the right area or person. I answer phones, monitor the door locks, and release the locks as needed to admit the many volunteers, workers and visitors. Since being here I’ve learned to write delivery tickets and tags for the food being sent to the many locations helping to stop hunger. ( I’m happy to say I’m up to two sheets a day, most of the time.) I’m helping with any task requested by the staff like using my ABC’s to organize name tags and mailers.
What have you liked best about volunteering with us?
I’m enjoying being around really caring, dedicated people who like what they do. It makes me feel good about my small part.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?
When I’m not at Second Helpings I like to help family and friends with their projects and visit my darling great nephew and nieces. I just had another little joy added to the great, great nieces. I like playing games so I meet weekly for Mahjong and monthly for bridge. I like to read and love to travel.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
Before Covid I went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art and helped pull weeds from the flower and veggie garden beds. Loved being surrounded by all that beauty. You just can’t be unhappy around flowers.
I also served as treasurer for 6 years, on the St. Vincent School of Nursing Alumnae board.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I once worked a summer as a second story window glazer on a house painting crew. Learned a lot, especially that I didn’t want that for a career.
