I am so happy to introduce Dean Hackett as our Volunteer of the Month for July 2023. Dean has been a Second Helping volunteer for about a year and half. He has been such a great addition to the volunteer family. Without hesitation, he jumps in where he is needed, leading groups in the Hunger Relief kitchen, serving on our Marketing Committee, and more.
Learn more about Dean in his own words below.
How did you become involved with Second Helpings?
I had heard about Second Helping through the many organizations that it supports. The mission always spoke to me, and I hoped to be a part of it one day. When I retired from my employer of almost 35 years (Linde), I knew it was time to get involved.
What things have you done since you began volunteering with us?
I have done a lot of things since joining Second Helpings. Primarily, I spend my time with the Sandwich and Grab-and-Go team. But I have also sorted food, worked the tilts, wrapped trays, chopped, and even spent time in the dish room. I also am lucky enough to serve on the Marketing Committee.
What have you liked best about volunteering with us?
I enjoy the Second Helping employees; my fellow volunteers and I take pride in the food that we produce.
What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?
I am proud to support so many organizations and serve people in need all over in Indianapolis. I enjoy paying back the community in which I live.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?
I retired about two years ago, so I am still trying to get “my retirement legs.” I spend most of my week in other volunteer roles, golfing and painting. My wife and I also travel and spend time with friends and family.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I am not a native Hoosier, but feel adopted by Indiana after living here for the past 35 years. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and moved to Indianapolis after finishing college (NC State) in 1988.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
I volunteer at Horizon House (supplying services to the homeless) and do some mentoring at the Lacy School of Business at Butler University.
