We are excited to introduce our Volunteers of the Month for December 2022, Sam and Carol Bixler!
Sam and Carol have been volunteering with Second Helpings for 8 months, serving more than 40 shifts, totaling more than 100 hours each! They are one of our incredible driving teams, delivering meals to our partner agencies every week.
Sam and Carol have been a great addition to the Second Helpings volunteer family. I remember the day they walked in. They were eager to learn about Second Helpings and the mission. It has been fun watching them get connected and serving on the Meal Delivery team, as well as jumping in for Tonic Ball. If you have not meet them, please do, they are an amazing couple. We are better because of their service.
Thank you for all you do Sam and Carol! Learn more about them in their own words below.
How did you become involved in Second Helpings?
We have contributed to SH pasta drives for many years through our church (Shalom Mennonite). After retiring and moving downtown, we thought SH might be a good outlet for our volunteer time, and within walking distance.
What types of things have you done since you began volunteering with us?
We have primarily been a Driver/Driver Companion team, but also helped with the Tonic Ball.
What have you liked best about volunteering with us?
The people we work with at SH and the people we meet at the agencies where we deliver food.
What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?
Being part of the work to move food from rescue to feeding people.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?
Read, walk, church, visit kids and grandkids (in NY/NJ… ☹), our building’s HOA, concerts.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
Carol volunteers at Horizon House in the donations center and we have both been volunteer ushers for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for many years at the Hilbert Circle Theater on Monument Circle. Please come and join us as patrons and/or as volunteers!
What would people be surprised to know about you?
That we’ve been doing food rescue for 33 years on a personal level… !
