With joy, I present the Second Helpings March 2022 Volunteer of the Month, Carlton Hinshaw!
You will often see Carl working on the tilts creating delicious meals for our community partners. Just recently, Carl joined the Kitchen Lead team by being a Second Helpings Ambassador for groups that come in and serve. His love for the mission here at Second Helpings shows in everything he does. Thank you for sharing your time to #FeedIndy!
Learn more about Carl in his own words:
How did you become involved in Second Helpings?
I don’t remember how I found out about Second Helpings. I have been in the food business for most of my life, and Second Helpings just comes with the territory.
What types of things have you done since you began volunteering with us?
I started with Second Helpings on June 8, 2021, as a Tilt Operator and have served in the Hub and as a Food Rescue Companion. I have also chopped meat and vegetables. I have recently become a “Kitchen Lead” for our returning groups. I really enjoy the kitchen lead position. It’s so much fun to meet all the people from the groups.
What have you liked best about volunteering with us?
The best thing about volunteering at Second Helpings, besides knowing you are working for a great cause, it is leaving knowing you are appreciated. I have never left a shift where I have not been thanked for my time and effort. We have a great staff.
What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?
I’m most proud to have been able to donate over 400 lbs. of food and collected more than $300 from the many fraternal organizations I belong to.
What do you do when you are not volunteering with us?
When I’m not volunteering, I can be found playing piano at various Masonic and Eastern Star meetings all over the state.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
Over the years, I have volunteered at various nursing homes playing piano for the residents. I was a volunteer for CASA for a couple years working with foster children reporting their needs to the courts. I also monitored court-appointed visitations for the Children’s Bureau of Indianapolis. Most recently, serving once a week at Gleaners Food Bank.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
A couple of little-known facts about me: I was the youngest first responder in an air disaster in 196. Mid-air collision with 84 people killed. I worked with the FBI and FAA at the site helping with the identification process. I also worked at the Indiana Repertory Theater for 7 seasons and appeared on stage in many Cabaret productions.
