Please congratulate Byron Daugherty, Second Helpings Volunteer of the Month for February 2022!
Byron has been a terrific addition to the Second Helpings volunteer family. Byron is not beyond helping when needed, often offering his service in different areas. Recently, Byron answered the call for an apartment community who was having major challenges. He enlisted the help of Patty Cortellini, Director of Partner Agencies and was able to provide some much-needed help. We appreciate Byron’s dedication to the mission of Second Helpings and our community.
Learn more about Byron, in his own words, below.
How did you become involved in Second Helpings?
A previous volunteer Chuck Matsumoto encouraged me to get involved years ago, so I volunteered initially while still working at Eli Lilly and Company. I have a passion for helping others and cooking, so Second Helpings was a perfect fit for my talents after I retired.
What types of things have you done since you began volunteering at Second Helpings?
I have served in Housekeeping, Spice Organizing, Sandwich Making, Dishwashing, Tilt Operating, Hub, Driving, and Meat and Produce Chopping.
What have you liked best about volunteering with us?
Being able to help others with food insecurity while at the same time working with an incredibly talented group of staff and volunteers. Second Helpings is an incredibly special place, and I am thrilled to be part of it.
What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?
I am proud of all my efforts to support the various tasks it takes to move food through the organization, but I think working to make tilts that really taste good and that our agencies will enjoy eating is a highlight for me.
What do you do when you are not volunteering with us?
I cook in my home kitchen for family and friends, and I love to work in our yard and vegetable garden in the summer, hike, and travel. I enjoy listening to classical music and visiting museums of all types.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
I volunteer with a couple of organizations in our community, including the Indy Hunger Network as their Data Steward, our church’s Community Outreach Ministries, serving a community meal in Perry Township, managing food preparation, and serving for Bridges Alliance of Johnson County, and teaching 4th and 5th graders at our church’s Sunday School!
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I had the opportunity to teach English to kindergarteners in Tanzania and I enjoy parachuting.
