In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re honoring the people who have spent the most time volunteering at Second Helpings! We couldn’t do it without these volunteers, and countless others who donate their time to feeding Indy.
- Leo Scott (7,030 hours) (retired) – Leo Scott was a volunteer even before there was a Second Helpings or a formal volunteer program. Leo was so integral to the Food Rescue program that he had a key to the building!
- Kevin Reid (5,892 hours) – Kevin has volunteered since 2004 and has served over 5,800 hours with Second Helpings! He helps deliver meals every Tuesday morning and often stays for the afternoon to help with food rescue or food sorting. You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced Kevin’s contagious laugh.
- Dick Bender (4,189 hours) – You can find Dick in the Hunger Relief kitchen on Wednesday and Friday mornings. In addition, Dick has introduced and mentored many long-term Second Helpings volunteers. When he’s not volunteering at SH, he’s volunteering at other organizations or riding his bike!

- Ryan Zumbahlen (3,191) – You can find Ryan rescuing food on the west side of Indianapolis every Friday morning. He has been with Second Helpings since 2002 and many have indulged in the tasty sodas he stocks in our break room vending machine. Did you know that Ryan donates all of that change to Second Helpings?
- Hal Cole (2,950) (retired) – Not only was Hal Cole a great Hunger Relief Kitchen volunteer – often coming in two times a week – he always had his educator hat on. He would bring books to the staff about management and workplace culture. Hal was always cheery and full of great stories.
- Meg Feldman (2,867) – Meg volunteers in the kitchen on Thursday afternoons and at the front desk on Friday afternoons. She always comes through when we are in a pinch and loves to volunteer with special events. She knows when we need help before we even do!
- Kathy Davis (2,707) – Kathy has been a dedicated Second Helpings volunteer since 2007. You can find her whipping up some delicious dishes in a tilt skillet every Monday morning and sorting through those huge Thursday bounties of bread.

- Carole Boleman (2,382) (retired) – Carole Boleman was one of those “bad weather” volunteers – as a busy landscape architect she didn’t have any free time during the sunny days. She was a master of the tilt skillet, creating recipes and meals – 600 at a time.
- John Spitznogle (2,245) – How would we be able to chop all of that food without sharp knives? Well, John volunteers every Wednesday morning as the official Second Helpings knife sharpener. Once, he has sharpened those blades to perfection, he joins the meat “cut-up” crew to put those knives to good use and get in some solid laughs.
- Anne-Marie Quets (2,205) – Originally from Belgium, Anne-Marie volunteers in the Hunger Relief Kitchen every Thursday morning with her husband, John. You will typically find her dicing up your favorite veggie!

- Bill Tardy (2,012) (retired) – As a volunteer delivery driver, Bill Tardy drove 940 times – that’s over 4000 meal deliveries! He was a tireless, always smiling volunteer – despite the number of stairs he had to climb with heavy meals and the number of pans he had to wash!
- Pete Davis (2,011) – A volunteer driver all day on Thursdays and Friday mornings, Pete has formed special relationships with several of the agencies and their kitchen staff. “There is not one Thursday or Friday morning that I’ve dreaded coming here. I love the mission,” Pete says.

- Doug Reichl (1,984) – Since the summer of 2002, Doug has volunteered every Thursday to deliver thousands of our Hunger Relief meals to partner agencies all over the city. He typically delivers to the same agencies each week and they get quite concerned when Commander Doug and Co-Pilot Alex aren’t the ones dropping off their delicious meals!
- Lew Mumford (1,952) – Lew devotes Wednesday and Thursday mornings to Second Helpings! On Wednesdays, you’ll find him with the cut-up crew, while he mans one of the tilt skillets on Thursdays. “Food opens doors for people in many ways.”
